High End Residential only. Making your home as energy efficient as possible should be at the top of your list. If nothing other than controlling the high energy costs. Homes built prior to 1989 were not built with Energy Star standards. In other words proper insulation, Low E glass, heating equipment with 80% FUE, 12 SEER condensers, energy star appliances. Even homes built to energy star standards if not properly maintained will not perform as designed.
Homes built prior to 1989 and not renovated may have drafts through walls, ceilings, floors, glass, etc; The heating, A.C., and domestic hot water systems if not updated will most likely be inefficient. In some cases the initial designs were an over kill to compensate for inefficiency.
If your renovating or adding on it is important to analyze the existing systems to determine its efficiency and capacity. In some cases the existing systems cannot handle the additional BTU load for your heating, cooling and domestic hot water. Therefore, upgrades or additional equipment may be required. Prioritizing the domestic hot water (boiler-mate) through a series of controls may be an option and eliminate the need for a larger system and save you money, energy and increase efficiency at the same time.
As for domestic hot water production, an "on demand type" as opposed to a storage tank or separate hot water heater may be a better use of energy and efficiency.
